Re: Overall Friendliness |
That's an interesting analysis of New Englanders. Of course people down here just call everyone from above the Frost line a damn yankee. I always think of the Northeast as being just one big metropolitan area but i guess ize was wrong 'bout dat.

Re: Overall Friendliness |
There is a large portion of the East Coast that create a mega-opolis from Washington to Philly to Ny to Boston. But if you were to travel north of Boston or west from any of the mega area, you would find regualr down home people. This would represent most of PA, all of upstate NY, western Mass (love the term masshole) then pretty much all of NH, VT, ME (my interpretation of the northeast). Most people in these 3 states have no love for massholes except their tourist money (sell your soul). Then theres poor little Rhode Island which may be my favorite anyhow.

Agree with you entirely on this one. Spending alot of time in Maine and New Hampshire, I can say that the people are very independent and leery of outsiders, but if you don't act like a conceited butt hole and respect the natives and the land, they'll greet you with open arms. I also sometimes will refer to NH and upstate Maine and the Kentucky of the NorthEast.

Re: Overall Friendliness |
"Many still live off the land as farmers, loggers, fisherman, and the industries that support those groups. They are leery and untrusting of "outsiders", hate the tourists for Fn up the beautiful countryside, but aware of how important the tourist dollars are to the economy."
for me this is an interesting twist JodyC
north of 60 it is widely discussed that industry is the destroyer and tourism seen as a means to preservation...but that could be because the north tends to attract heavier industries (oil, gas, mining)
does the northeast states have smaller operations (family run???) with greater local controls, along with the issue of more tourists occupying less area?
people tend to be very friendly the more remote you get (esp in places with a high rate of transience), most people will share a friendly thought or two as the situation allows, even to people they have never met before (kinda like a GD show) and at least a genuine howdy-do when walking past...a real culture shock when i travel "outside" for a visit to a big city

Re: Overall Friendliness |
My Grandma was the 1st Queen of The Cass County King Corn Carnival in 1935. Cass County is in Eastern Nebraska.
I escorted her to the 70th anniversary of the Carnival in '05 and found the most friendly and down-to-earth folks there.
Didn't get to go back this year, but I'm hoping Grandma will go with me and my family for one last visit. Both my grandparents grew up in Plattsmouth, NE, so my entire family history(Dad's side) is there.
During our '05 visit, we were lost on dirt roads looking for a cemetary. Grandma just wanted to stop at any farm to ask directions, which was wierd to me. BUT, we pulled in to a working farm and got directions from a man who turned out to be a distant cousin....wow.
I'll never forget the nice folks I met on that visit.

North of 60? Don't follow. I didn't say they were right in their thinking, they just are reluctant to embrace change. Without the tourist money, NH would be in a bigger world of hurt. However, alot of tourist money never comes close to reaching the hands of those who need it most. They also still have no sales tax, but are in dire need of it, especially with the people moving across the border from Mass spending lots of cash in the south of the state. Don't forget the motto of NH "Live Free or Die". They kind of still take that to heart. Don't know if this was even a response Midnight Sun, maybe just a further elaboration.

Re: Overall Friendliness |
sorry about that JodyC, by north of 60 i meant north of the 60th degree parallel, otherwise known as the global arctic region, which faces similar eco circumstances no matter which country
just thought it was interesting that tourism in the south is more or less viewed as an ecological disaster, where as in the far north it is used to justify vast areas designated protected from industrial developement..it's a tough sell because eco tourism operations don't generally generate the high wages or royalties that heavy industry can offer
i can certainly see the viewpoint of the good folks of NH...i myself don't live an hour out of town to have people trespass without permission or throw garbage into my fav fishing pond (i guess my wife and i could be classified as reclusive)...on the other hand, i never think twice about stopping to lend a hand to some poor unfortunate broken down out on the lonely highway, or if they were to show up at my door genuinely requiring assistance...been there enough times myself to know what real despair feels like (as all of us)
as always, appreciate your responses and elaborations

Re: Overall Friendliness |
I figured it would be longitude/ latitude (isn't that a Buffet tune)related. Its odd, NH has beautiful MTs, lakes, state owned ski areas, hiking trails etc. There is not much rev generated by the natual resources (except the ski areas)but the towns that surround them get the biz. people drive up from all over the country to see foliage for a months, which cost nothing, but they stay, eat, drink, shop while they're there. Most people live as far from those towns as they can because of the "congestion", rude out of towners, jacked up prices, etc

I've lived in NH (southern) for ~22 years and agree with the comments above. I've found the friendliest people to be in the south..Tennessee, Georgia, etc.

Re: Overall Friendliness |
I've been a New Englander for years now and agree that while people in the Northeast, especially rural areas like VT (where I now live) and NH, and ME. may seem a bit chilly or aloof at first, if they accept you and get to know you over time, they are extremely giving of their time, spirit and friendship.
The nature of a small state like VT (2nd lowest population in the US next to Wyoming, I believe) is such that neighbors get to know one another and look out for each other, while still maintaining a spirit of overall independence. ('course there's good and bad everywhere and any state including VT has its share of nasty folk)...But even tho' I'll always be a "flatlander", having moved here from Boston, I do love the Green MT. State and find the people here to be mostly terrific.
From people i've spoken to about the south (and having gine to college in the south) it seems folks there are generally much friendlier "up front" and quickly, but not necessarily interested in forming a deeper or long-term friendship. (This is of course something I take w/a grain of salt as exactly that--a generalization, and exceptions to any can be always be found.)
It all depends on one's personal experiences, I guess...
oh, and just about every Canadian I've ever met has been "aboot" the friendliest person you could imagine !

Re: Overall Friendliness |
I lived in Charlotte for about 3 yrs and covered the SE U.S. as my sales territory. The southerners are, up front, a sweet and charitable group of people. Mellow, polite- just down home. But, being the ever wary Yankee (and I will use the least politically correct terms)I always had second thoughts when I see them get in a vehicle with a confederate flag and a license plate holder saying The South will Rise Again. I will no doubt offend a kind southerner with this stereotype I formed, but they'll love you as long as you're not a yankee, jew, african american, gay and so forth. There were constant signs as I drove rural areas that they haven't really given up the fight yet, and one day everything will return to normalcy. That is about as outspoken as I will get on any subject, and no hard feeling towards our southern Heads.

Re: Overall Friendliness |
I'm a Southern Head by birth. Born in Virginia, lived in the Shenandoah Valley alot (that's where I-81 plows through). Lived in the Bay area briefly. Atlanta GA and now Jackson, Mississippi. (no offense taken by the way).
I've been here for 8 1/2 years. How the Hell did that happen?
The people here are nice and polite and some are extremely friendly and giving. I think there is a general feeling of intolerance towards others but it has gotten better in the years I've been here. I think it has just taken the South time to catch up and they're having growing pains. I think the main thing that has helped is the good ole Internet - you have to pay attention 'cause it's in your house.
What I found the most disturbing is the racial divide but it is mostly socio-economic than true racial. People can't believe that it doesn't exist EVERYWHERE. And it is different down here in that concern. They just need to get out more I guess.

aye! the way you pronounce "aboot", you must be referring to the east coast Canadians, the "bluenosers" (and the Trailer Park Boys)
specifically the Newfoundlanders are a rare breed...Newfies being one of the only races that openly make jokes about themselves
why wasn't Jesus born in Newfoundland?
because they couldn't find 3 wise men and a virgin
ba dum...tssss
